Introduction
Last month, the Supreme Court directed all states and union territories in India to monitor unnecessary hysterectomies being performed. Economically disadvantaged women sometimes feel coerced into getting their uterus removed so that they can continue to work through the month without the problem of menstrual bleeding and pain. Lack of hygiene and sanitation contributes to gynecological problems and money for the surgery often leads to death. Is women's health not given enough priority in India? How can the issue of these missing wounds be comprehensively dealt with? We explore these questions and more with public health activist Dr. Narindra Gupta.
