Some patients end up with an EMG. That can show the nerve entrapment findings, but do all patients need that? It's a good question. I've actually seen a few patients who have let their carpal tunnel syndrome get quite advanced, and you can actually see some atrophy of those thinner muscles. Any form of treatment while it'll improve symptoms predictably won't improve the degree of muscle loss that they've actually sustained.
