The Second Amendment: A Bribe
The Second Amendment started out as a bribe steeped in anti-Blackness and white supremacy. The Southerners wanted Madison to incorporate language into the Bill of Rights that would allow the militias to operate as a slave-controlled device. James Madison knew that if there were to be a nation at all worth living in, he'd have to give in to the South wanting to be protected from slave revolts.
