The far reaches of Northwest China in the province called Xinjiang are uninhabitable. It's valuable to China now because it's got their largest supplies of oil, natural gas and several very important mineral deposits there. The pre-modern kingdoms that were there, and again, you can't think of these like Sumeria or something where they're going to build pyramids or something out on the step. These were tribal confederations out there.
