James is one of the very few people in the world to have sound taste synesthesia. He has been studied a lot, both in consistency tests and brain scans. Sound taste synesthesia is rare but there are more common types such as sequence space synesthesia. It does mean that everybody knows somebody with synesthesia even though they don't know each other.
