The true value that a majority of the industry gets out of software engineers, there are obviously going to be some niches which leverage very deep technical skills and theory specifically when you're dealing with distributed systems or large scale optimization problems. What is actually most useful is to just pick a problem and start working on it, right? And it's also harder, hard to just come up with some random idea and pull it through to the end. So an easier first step would be to look at a lot of open source projects who have good first issues, right?
