The Cost of Fees on Mutual Funds

Fees are lower on an index fund because that's the way Vanguard first designed it. Don Bogel, when he founded the Vanguard company, started it as a mutual benefit type of company. So we wanted to get our return from the fund and therefore the whole idea of having low fees in the fund was to our benefit. The majority of people who are trying to outperform because of fees underperform.
