They become these kind of figures who can be appropriated and used by others in ways that not only neglects the reality of their own experience, but also is sometimes in conflict with it. And beyond that, you can use martyrdom in the idea of orthodox christians versus heretical christians or christians versus moslems. That's part of the through line of martyrdom's history, all the way from eusebius up to fox.
