Introduction

Around 400 million years ago, fish started to become a little more like us. At the swampy margins between land and water, some fish turned fins into limbs. In today's world, there are tens of thousands of species of animals that live on land. Those with arms and legs, fingers and toes are called tetrapods. And we can all trace our heritage back to a common ancestor which lived somewhere around400 million years ago in the Devonian period of earth history.
