The Politics of Insurance
The first insurance institutions were community based, often term like fraternal organizations. These kinds of institutions that we think of as core to a leftist project around solidarity and mutual aid are the original institutional forms of insurance. Of course, it became increasingly financialized starting, you know, 150 years ago or so. And thus has been speeding along that pathway ever since. But that doesn't mean it can't go back or that maybe the point is not to revive some idealized, Halcyon idea of insurance as a fraternal organization.
