The first celebrity rehab facility was the Charles B. Townes Hospital, which opened in 1901. It treated alcoholics with belladonna, which is a poison. "I don't recommend taking belladonna," he says. The hospital cost $350 a day in 1901, about $5,600 a day in modern currency.
