Machiavelli's History of Florence

Poggio depicts Florence as the brave protector of Italian liberty against Milanese aggression. He also echoes Bruni's support for an oligarchic, or narrow republic. Still, his historical works could not have been written by anyone else. They are stuffed with characteristic aphorisms and one-liners.
