Mabel normand was born in 18 92 to an irish family on staten island. When she was 16, she sought out work as an artist's model for charles dana gibson and offered to be one of his 'gibson girls' Gibson girls were the colloquial term for the feminine ideal which gibson put forth in his pen and ink illustrations of young, white american women. Mabel would occasionally pose for photographers who produced photoslides for the kind of illustrated psalms that roscoe arbuckle performed in vaudeville houses around this time.
