The Importance of Merchants in the Late Middle Ages

i was wondering if you could tell us a bit more about the influence, in particular, that merchants had in this explosion of information. They were among the very earliest adopters of paper as a mechanism of information storage. It was absolutely central to their undertakings. Their world was very much one that required this observational ethic. And they abstracted their world by recording it in numbers in their account books.
