Maine's wild blueberry growers have used burning to encourage re growth while also eliminating weeds, insects and diseases. Nicholas is one of the few blueberry farmers who still do the burn by hand. The mechanized burns use dezel oil, which burns so hot that it damages what's the duff layer - a layer of top soil full of vital nutrients.
