Kant was trying to offer some more legs on which to support Rawls' basic claim that he's almost like Rawls is saying. And I don't even know that it was that much of an improvement on what Kant was saying. But here was an insight from Marx that not enough philosophers have internalized has taken in, which is that theories can be formally correct but also materially incorrect or inadequate.
