The Origins of the Alphabet

The Phoenicians used an alphabet to write their trade records. An early version of the alphabet had been used by Semitic speakers throughout Canaan and even down into the Arabian Peninsula. It appears likely that all alphabetic writing systems used today came from one original source. The alphabet was invented once, and it's been borrowed over and over again ever since.
