Simon and Schuster's new book, The Red Territory, is about the American experience. In a chapter called "The Train of Tears," Simon describes how settlers tried to eliminate Indians from their land. He writes that they celebrated all the most notorious meetings in the U.S. southeast where settlers came across those who they called 'civilized tribes' They were people like the Cherokee and Seminole who had advanced systems of government but also took slaves.
