The Emergence of Meta Science
The major system is really focused around sort of peer review and the idea that scientists can kind of independently decide which areas of science are important. And so if you're an academic and you're trying to get tenure, that's sort of the big career incentive a lot of scientists want. But it also means that the corresponding sort of scientific gain we get from that finding is less. The incentives in our scientific system are pushing for scientists to arbitrarily take singles and doubles as opposed to aiming for the home run.
