I'm just a little bit more complicated when you think about what kind of needs this agent needs to satisfy. Another thing that comes up in the literature on animal cognition that definitely matters for AI, and here I think one of the parathematic works is Margaret Bowden's work on life and intelligence. You cannot be intelligent if you're not autonomous. If you're not an autonomous thinker, you don't count as a member of the members of rationality... you don't have rational standing. That sounds a little bit harsh, but the idea is that autonomy comes with the self- satisfaction of needs.
