In the 18th century in Fujian, a lowly government official called Hu Tiambao fell in love with a handsome young imperial inspector of Fujian province. But because of the inspector's higher status, Hu did not dare express his forbidden desires. And Hu was caught peeping at the inspector through a bathroom wall, and he confessed his attraction. The inspector then had his admire beaten to death. Soon after his death, Hu appeared to a man from his hometown in a dream announcing that the king of the underworld had appointed him the rabbit god.
