The Origins of Lupercolia
Lupercoli is an ancient pagan festival where a goat, several goats and a dog were sacrificed. The hide was then dipped in the sacrificial blood and passed around by men. In some accounts, involves gently slapping women with the bloody hides. It supposedly was meant to encourage fertility in the coming year for the women on the receiving hint of the bloody hide slappings.
