Moses is not recording his own death as you mentioned and at the end of Deuteronomy. Only an inspired person could do this kind of editorial. God loves to conquer giants with little boys. And I think that's what's going on here. The Lord's working in this one man with 12 kids sojourning in the land. That's how he's going to build an eternal kingdom.
