The Role of Trials in Ancient Rome
In ancient Rome, certain Roman magistrates could not be prosecuted while in office. If your job involves holding what the Romans called the Imperium, you are immune to prosecution because you have authority over the courts. It's wildly corrosive to the virtues of a republic and a democracy if you believe that you're a sucker for playing by the rules when the people who benefit the most from the system aren't.
