The Importance of the Messiah in Christianity
Gospel of Mark was written in around the year 70, right when Jerusalem is under siege and like literally tens of thousands of Judeans are enslaved. Another maybe a hundred thousand are killed. The temple is destroyed. This is an apocalyptic situation. And then in about the year 100, John shows up and Jesus's fingering Thomas' side. So there's a lot of ambivalence going on here... nowhere is the ambivalence more stark than in the first written gospel.
