In Moscow's Shadows

CHAPTER

Is Putin a Papajaniats?

I think that's really important because it carries with it this sense precisely that things could have been different. And in particular, I think what's fascinating for me is this provides an alternative way of actually thinking about Putin. Not in the sense that Putin is a Papajaniats, that he's a sort of a man from the future come the past or whatever. But actually, as a kind of Russia as being caught in a sort of inverse Papjaniats situation of sorts. It's not about the modern man coming into the past. It's about the past intruding into the present.
