The Importance of Diversity in Dolls
As a queer Asian American boy, dolls were one of the only sources of joy in my childhood. I think that Monster High dolls were definitely a lot more alternative and spooky looking compared to their blonde hair, blue-eyed counterparts. There's always themes of marginalization and the embracing of radical diversity that was extremely normalized into the Monster High brand. Although I was gravitated towards the pretty and intricate outfits of the dolls as a child, I still appreciate the whole message that Monster High was pushing.
