The siege of Leningrad lasted for 872 days, almost two and a half years. The suffering of the city's population was just beyond anything imaginable. More than 600,000 people starved. Cannibalism became a rampant problem. And only in January of 1944 was the siege lifted by a massive Soviet counter-offensive.
