The Long Gap Between Formosa's Disappointment
Kerr left the diplomatic service after the Nationalist crackdown. He returned to the United States in 1947, taking on a succession of university teaching positions. His anti-Jangkai-shek stance caused problems for him but he was still able to get work on academia and field work with US government. Kerr spent most of the last decades of his life in Hawaii; he died in 1992.
