The Three Clauses of the Great War
The war between Salucus and Chandragupta would last down to 303 BC. A decisive peace was brokered through a treaty with three clauses. The terms seem to favor the former emperor, since paying 500 elephants out of a stockpile of thousands wasn't an expensive investment. But this gift would prove invaluable in defeating their rival Hellenistic kingdoms. By the end of his reign, ChandRagupta had conquered all of northern India from the Bay of Benagal to the sin province of modern Pakistan. According to Hemachandra, a 12-year famine had gripped India so fiercely that it pushed Chandrangupta to voluntarily abdicate the throne for his son Bindusara
