John Haig had been married before to a woman named Beatrice Hamer. We know very little about that relationship, but there was some talk about them having a child. Whether Beatrice had relationships with other men and had a child, I don't think we know. But as you say, he was still married. He had never gone through any form of divorce. And he'd always promised Barbara Stevens that, or she certainly imagined that once she became of age, as it were, 21 in those days, that he would get divorced and that he would marry her.
