We breathe in oxygen and then we respite out carbon dioxide. When your body does this, it sends an alarm to your body to give you the urge to want to breathe. Your diaphragm, it shakes and convulses inside of you to let you know, hey, you got to breathe right now. It's kind of like how on commercial airlines called a stick shaker that will shake the yoke of the plane at the pilot if he is in trouble.
