Nelson Mandela was not engaged in civil disobedience because he advocated constrained forms of violence like sabotage. People who hold sit-ins in government buildings to protest the Iraq war are simply disobedient for Rawls. Only then can you say you're engaged in justifiable civil disobedience, says John Avlon. He argues that liberal societies tend to be respectful when possible of demonstrations of sincere conviction.
