The vibe of the book maybe reminded me the most of Sula. Once you get into it the characters are so just fully realized and complicated and lovely. The one thing that worked was Moshe in this character for the other if you read Rebecca you read it but the other like that character worked and that became this hook and entree into another interesting story. There's a body we don't know who it is which is my only quibble as well.
