Gabran is trying to take a more optimistic approach. He's choosing to see evil in others as simply good, tortured by hunger and thirst. This reminds me of that part of the Gulag Archipelago where Solzhenitsyn says: "The lion separating good and evil passes not through states nor between classes nor between political parties"
