CHAPTER

The Problem of Conscious Experiences

You are mistaken if you think you're conscious. Conscious experiences exist, and they depend in ways that we can examine on the brain. And the challenge is to explain the properties of conscious experiences in terms of things going on inside brains and bodies. Questions like why does visual experience appear to us the way it does, and why is that different from an emotion? What does it mean to be a self? Why is the experience of being aself different from the experience of listening to music, for instance? Things like that. This isn't a new approach, of course. A lot of people do this all the time, but it's a nice way to to formalize and frame it.
