The Rise and Fall of the Sony Walkman
The TPS-L2 was the world's first low-cost portable stereo. Originally released in Japan on July 1, 1979 and sold for close to 40,000 yen. At the time, this was the equivalent of around $150 US dollars. But as Sony prepared to launch it in America in June 1980, it needed a more descriptive name. The next possible name was the Stowaway for countries like the UK but this presented a problem.
