Is There a Motivation to Believe in a God?

Historically it was common for people to postulate gods for explanatory reasons. Nowadays we understand, high and large, how a lot of those things work. And so I think the explanation nowadays is largely psychological because what belief in a God allows people to do is to hang on to the idea that things like death isn't the end.
