CHAPTER

Is It Possible to Regulate the Cation System by Light?

In 1987, scientists from Japan showed that in fact humans can regulate their cation system by light. It was always assumed when I was doing my PhD, you know, how do we relate our regulator clocks to the external world. But as you might predict with biology, it's more complicated than that. The new photoreceptors are maximally sensitive in the blue part of the spectrum - four hundred and eighteen nanometers. Why? Well, it could be because at twilight, the dome of the sky is enriched with blue light. And if you've got receptors tuned to different colors, they can detect ratio changes on those colours which then pass on information for colour vision.
