Bowel prep hyponatremia may occur with any bowel preps, including peg and pico-salax. A Foley catheter should be placed ASAP for accurate monitoring of urine output as free water diuresis is one of the main mechanisms of action for hypertonic saline. Failure to treat can lead to worsening neurologic status, permanent brain damage, or even death.
