The Roman Empire - A History of Rome
By the early third century b c, rom controlled around 14 thousand square kilometers of territory on the italian peninsula. Every year, roman armies were engaged in grinding military campaigns aimed at extending their hold over territory in italy. The building of k infra structure, particularly roads that joined these newly won territories with the city of Rome, quickly followed conquest.
