The framework comes from a Japanese concept called eke guy, which is what is your reason for being. When you use your values to generate ideas, you really get a chance to stick close to doing work that you care about. A lot of times we're trained to focus first on what you could be paid for. That can be okay and that can be a good strategy because of course it's nice to get funding or support for an idea. But if you follow that pathway of just focusing on what you can get paid for, you can run the risk of developing ideas that you don't want to actually study.
