The Effect of Peers on Prison Behavior
Milgram's experiments were a shocking illustration of how easy it is to get people to listen to authority. Now it turns out there is another kind of social influence also besides authority, and that is the influence of your peers. The guards started acting like bullies to the prisoners, making them do arbitrary things just for the sake of punishment. And this all happened quite quickly.
