The history of skepticism in India is at least as old, if not older, than philosophy. The hymn of creation suggests that the secrets of creation may elude even the gods. Even the authors of epic literature were unsettled enough to respond. In the Mahabharata, the god Indra ruefully remarks: "I was pointlessly fond of critical inquiry"
