The Church's Persecution of Jews
All christians were ordered to confess and take communion at least once a year. This would be expanded to include a prohibition against possessing most books of the bible. The council also took aim at jews, who were forced to wear specific symbols on their clothing,. It banned jewish converts to christianity from observing jewish rituals. All in all, the fourth lateran council laid down what more has called a machinery of persecution for western christendom. Where scripture had previously been used to reject the death penalty and persecution, the church now found scriptural support for the killing of heretics.
