Dana's interdisciplinary environmental studies program was soon oversubscribed, and it was set at Blue Plan for other colleges around the country. She refused to be pigeonholed in one department, but insisted on working across faculties. I think we had a very rare, privileged introduction to this institution in that we both came there, not caring whether we got fired. So neither of us needed to do things Dartmouth's way, and we proceeded not to. We tried some new things, and they didn't fit very well, but they succeeded.
