Paul Barra was in his mid-30s when the revolution broke out. He lived like a pre-revolutionary aristocrat, all funded by kickbacks and embezzlement. His money and power made him one of the leading lights of the opulent new social scene emerging in Paris. In many ways he was emblematic of all the worst aspects of the Thermidorian government.
