The Self-Ionization of Water
A substance can act as an acid and a base at the same time. Water is, as I said before, an excellent example of an amphoteric substance. So water can self-ionize into one hydroxide ion and one proton or one hydrogen ion. But it can also go the other way: The hydroxide and the hydrogen can come together to form a water molecule.
