Sergei Karanyov: The First Deputy Head of the FSB
Bortnikov is still exercising overall management functions at Ljubyanka. He's not lost his control over the institution by any means, but he's certainly generally regarded as having lost any particular desire to get involved in the day-to-day management. The anointed successor, which is likely to happen unfortunately for reasons I'll come into, is Sergei Karanyov, who is his first deputy head. And a man who I must admit is that worst possible combination as far as I'm concerned, as being both, and the sound of it, deeply unpleasant.
