Mocking pretentiousness is kind of a human universal. You can't double down because your intent was pure. If you cross over the line, one thing I think that's really useful is watch a lot of stand up comedy and watch how professional comedians deal with audience reaction when it's a little bit like they've stepped over the line. Bill Burr is really good at making extremely edgy, super offensive things. And then the audience collectively gasps and then he kind of saves the moment with a kind of throwaway, self mocking line That acknowledges everybody's discomfort and kind of makes it okay and validates it.
